Weather 101

Today is yet another example that weather forecasting for the future also includes forecasting for the moment -- a term that is called "now-casting" -- which I have discussed in the past...

Wet weather continues on Saturday for parts of the Garden state

Radar update:

Due to the on-going rain -- temperatures have reached their limit of around 65 degrees for the NJ metro area...

Gray skies for NJ metro for much of the weekend

Latest post: 1:15pm - 5/18/2013

A weather disturbance has provided gray skies on Saturday for much of metro New Jersey...

Some additional light rain-showers are possible for the remainder of the day ... and temperatures will only rise a few more degrees to a high between 65 and 70.

By this evening, high pressure to our north and low pressure to our south are expected to keep us cloudy, with scattered showers once again moving in, first in southern New Jersey this evening, then moving north into the rest of the area overnight. Temperatures will fall into the 50s.

On Sunday, these two weather features continue to maintain gray skies and wet weather in the forecast, with more showers. Temperatures are expected to only range from around 60 at the shore, to around 65 for inland areas.
Sunday night will see some drizzle and light rain, along with areas of fog, with temperatures mostly in the 50s once again.

For the start of the new work-week on Monday, it turns warmer, with highs in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees inland, and between 60 - 65 at the coast. Scattered showers are still possible.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will see a variety in temperatures, with warmer readings in central and southern NJ, where highs top out between 75 and 80 degrees, and cooler temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees for northern NJ, NYC and Long Island.
Scattered showers and some heavy thunderstorms will be around each afternoon.

10:45am update

Radar images have been detecting an area of light rain for parts of NJ over the last hour...

A disturbance moving across New York State and Pennsylvania the reason for this...
Most weather models have been underestimating the cloud cover and the precipitation with this weather feature...

Some sprinkles or light showers can be expected through early this afternoon.

A change in the forecast for NJ metro

Weather update: The sun we were supposed to start the day with is being robbed by a weather disturbance seen on the satellite picture. This was not, and is still currently not being predicted well by the weather models...

So, with that said, today is looking like a cloudy day, with temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees.
Rain is not expected during the daylight hours, with showers holding off until after dark, particularly for southern New Jersey...
More details soon.

How long will the nice weather last?

Weather update on my website

NJ metro weather forecast

A sunny side to the end of the week for New Jersey metro

Latest post: 2:30pm -- 5/17/2013

The Garden state is seeing some nice weather Friday afternoon...

Skies will be partly to mostly sunny for the rest of the day with highs in the 60s for NYC, Long Island, and coastal New Jersey, and inland locations reaching 70-75 degrees.

Tonight turns partly cloudy, with lows falling mainly into the 50s.

** More certainty for the weekend weather system, but with some details still needed to be determined. **

Saturday is expected to start with some sun, with clouds arriving in the afternoon. It will be dry for central and northern NJ, NYC and Long Island. A few showers may arrive for southern sections of the Garden state by evening. Temperatures top out between 60 and 65 degrees for the coast, and around 70 for inland areas.

Saturday night should be mostly cloudy, with a few scattered showers possible. Low temperatures drop into the 50s for most areas once again.

Sunday continues with mainly cloudy skies. The day is not expected to be a wash-out, but some showers will be around for the afternoon. Temperatures reach between 65 and 70 degrees inland, and in the lower 60s along the shore.
More showers are likely for Sunday night, along with temperatures in the 50s.

Next week, the area will be near a frontal boundary, separating very warm, summer-like air, and cooler spring temperatures. It is difficult to determine the exact placement of this weather feature at this time, and the chances for rain from it.
In general showers and thundershowers can be expected each afternoon for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Temperatures will be highest in the southern NJ, with 80 degrees likely, and coolest for coastal areas of NJ, as well as Long Island and NYC, where highs may not get out of the 60s.

Future weather data will determine a more accurate forecast.
Stay tuned.

Another cool day for NJ metro

Latest post: 9:05am -- 5/14/2013

After temperatures in the 30s early this morning, highs are expected to reach between 60 and 65 degrees for much of the Garden state, NYC, and Long Island. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny, along with a brisk breeze at times.

Tonight turns out clear once again, but not as cold as recent nights. Lows drop into the 40s.

The warm-up begins on Wednesday -- but with mostly cloudy skies. Showers are possible in the afternoon, as temperatures top out in the upper 60s.
Some more showers will be around Wednesday night, with readings in the 50s to around 60 degrees.

Thursday and Friday are expected to be even warmer, but now expected to be dry days, as a weather disturbance which was earlier forecasted to move into the area, stays south of the region. Skies average out partly sunny.

The weekend remains warm, and could turn cloudy and wet, as a storm system comes close to us once again. Highs reach the 60s to around 70 degrees.

** Updates on the weekend will be monitored, and the forecast will be adjusted accordingly.
