3:15pm update

Temperatures have reached their high levels for the day, and will remain steady in the upper 80s and lower 90s for the rest of the afternoon, and slowly fall through the 80s this evening.
The cold front continues to make progress toward the area, and we wait for the front to pass through the area overnight.

Some thunderstorms may move into northwestern sections of New Jersey by around 5pm, but the main line is still expected to arrive between 8 and 10pm tonight, with some heavy downpours expected, and scattered severe storms as well.

Officially a 7th day of the heat wave for NJ metro

Toms River New Jersey is 90 degrees at 11am -- extending our heat wave to 7 consecutive days...

Clouds have thinned out some, but high temperatures should be hot, but lower than yesterday due to some cloudiness earlier -- topping out between 90-93 for most areas.
Ingredients are forecast to come together for showers and locally severe thunderstorms.
Scattered storms are possible this afternoon -- but my thinking is the main line of storms now appears to arrive between 6 and 10pm, as weather models continue to differ some on timing.
Radar images will be observed during the course of the day, and evening to best determine location and intensity.
Severe weather watches may be issued later this afternoon to focus on the evening storms.
More details as the become available.

One more hot, but not as hot, day for NJ metro

Latest post:9:10am -- 7/20/2013

Rain does not appear to occur until the actual arrival of the cold front... as this line has weakened and dissipated...
However, some additional weakening showers in Pennsylvania have kept clouds overhead, and this will help temperatures to rise slower than recent days, so it will not be as hot this afternoon.
Some areas may not reach 90 degrees, but those that do, will extend the heat wave to a 7th consecutive day.
The weather front is scheduled to arrive after 4 or 5pm... at which time showers and thunderstorms are likely, and severe weather possibilities will be monitored.

Cooler temperatures in the 80s are expected on Sunday, but this front may stall near, or over the area, -- which will keep clouds and humidity in place, and the the threat for showers, especially for central and southern New Jersey, as well as for Long Island.
A storm may also develop on this front keeping a wet weather threat for Monday and Tuesday.
More weather data will be analyzed today to fine-tune this.

Showers and thunderstorms will break the heat this weekend for NJ metro

Weather update:
A cold front continues to move toward the area for the weekend...
One weather model is suggesting that before the main front arrives, some showers and thunderstorms may develop between 8am and 9am Saturday -- (this is called "pre-frontal" precipitation). If this verifies, and cools the air temperature from the mid 80's down to the upper 70s, it may be tough for the temperature to rebound back over 90 degrees tomorrow, which would end the heat wave for some locations.. This is a low chance, about 30%.

A better chance of storms (50-60%) arrives after 4pm -- which could have severe capabilities.

Radar images will be monitored during the course of the day.

The heat breaks on Sunday, with highs in the mid- to upper 80s.
The humidity may take longer to end, depending on whether this latest front stalls, and keeps showers in the forecast for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Future weather data will help determine this as well.

1:20pm radar update

Some local relief from thunderstorms on the north shore of Long Island around the East Setauket, East Shoreham, and Riverhead area...

Weekend weather update for NJ metro

Latest post: 1:10pm -- 7/19/2013

A cold front will put an end to the current heat wave...

Saturday is expected to make 7 straight days of 90-plus-degree temperatures, with the arrival of this next weather system forecast to arrive late in the afternoon, or early evening.
Temperatures tomorrow can range from 93 to as high as 98 if it arrives closer to sunset...
Showers and thunderstorms are likely, and severe weather potential will be monitored, as storms move east and southeast from Pennsylvania and New York State...
Rain and thunderstorms will break the heat tomorrow night...

There are differences on whether this front will clear our region entirely, or stall near us, and keep a storm system around for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Either way, it will be cooler, with highs between 80 ad 85 degrees; it is only a question of whether the cooler air will also include clouds and rain.

More details as they become available.

Heat advisories of course remain for the entire area through this evening.

High on the thermometer, and everything else...

Temperature at Newark at 12pm -- 95 degrees --
Humidity: 50% -- very high for this air temperature --

The week ends -- but the heat wave does not for NJ metro

Weather update: (7:45am -- 7/19/2013)

Another day of 95-100 temperatures. (Day 6 of the heat wave).
Slight chance of an afternoon and evening shower or thunderstorm, particularly for northwest New Jersey. (20-30%).

Saturday looks like day 7 of 90+ degree temperatures, but this will  be the last day of the current heat wave. Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are forecast to arrive later in the afternoon and evening.
Sunday will be cooler -- mid- to upper 80s, with a low to moderate chance of showers. Humidity looks to fall during the course of the day.

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Heat wave to end soon

Weather update:
With a very warm jump-start Friday morning (82-87 degrees), temperatures
will make another run at 100 degrees...
The last of the 90-degree days for this heat wave will be on Saturday.
A strong cold front with severe weather possibilities will arrive Saturday evening.
Some showers continue on Sunday with highs in the mid- 80s, but humidity will be slow to drop.
The nicest day in what will be over a week, arrives Monday.

Wet Friday -- then a heat wave again for NJ metro

Latest post: 2:45pm - 7/12/2013

Weather update:
Many areas across the NJ metro area are seeing light rain, thanks to a weather from moving back toward the area.
The heaviest rain is down in southern NJ...

The weather models keep the heaviest rain there for much of the evening and tonight -- with scattered showers elsewhere for the Garden state, NYC and Long Island.
This weather system will be mainly over Delaware, Maryland and Virginia tomorrow, keeping most of the wet conditions in those areas, but a pop-up shower or thunderstorm is possible for our area as well.
Sunday is looking like the nicer, but the hotter of the two weekend days... as we begin another heat-wave -- which is forecast to be with us right through next week with highs reaching 90-95 inland, and 80s at the shore...

A wet end to the work-week for parts of NJ metro

Latest post: 8:10am - 7/12/213

Weather update:
Rain a good bet for southern New Jersey later this morning, and for Long Island later today --

Details soon.

Weather front has moved through much of the NJ metro area

The latest weather front has moved through much of the metro area quicker than anticipated.
The threat for heavy rain appears to have ended -- with only a scattered shower or thunderstorm a low possibility.
The weather models do bring this front back close to our area tomorrow -- with another threat for rain, especially for southern NJ and Long Island.

The weekend forecast continues to remain uncertain and a low-confidence forecast.

A break in the heat in sight for NJ metro

A break in the heat in sight for NJ metro...

Latest text post: 4:00pm - 7/9/2013

A sixth straight day of seeing 90-degree temperatures for the NJ metro area...

Very warm to hot temperatures continue this afternoon. Temperatures have peaked in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees, with some cooler readings at the shore.
Scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm will affect a few spots through early this evening. A brief heavy downpour is possible.

Tonight turns out partly cloudy. Lows drop to between 70 and 75 degrees for much of the area.

Tomorrow overall will feature more of the same. A weather front is expected to get closer to our area on Wednesday, bringing more clouds to the region. If the clouds arrive soon enough, we may see temperatures peak in the middle to upper 80s, officially ending the heat wave. Showers and thunderstorms are a higher probability tomorrow -- some of which could be heavy.
Wednesday night could see more showers and some heavy thunderstorms, as readings fall back into the 70s.

Thursday has the best chance of wet weather this week, as the weather front will be near our area. Some of the storms with this front may be severe, and will be monitored for any watches or warnings.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday turns less humid, with partly to mostly sunny skies, and highs in the 80s.

It's another hot one out there -- but not as high in the temperature department compared to Sunday...
Highs today will top out around 90 degrees -- extending our heat wave to a 5th straight day...
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are in southwestern New Jersey as of this post, and more of the area can see a heavy downpour along with a rumble of thunder later this afternoon...

Tonight might see a shower or thunderstorm early, otherwise skies will be partly cloudy. Lows fall to between 70 and 75 for much of the region.

The rest of the week is shown by the weather models to feature more of the same... partly sunny skies with highs in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. It is expected to be slightly cooler along the shore.
Showers and thunderstorms will be around each afternoon, with the best chance for rain coming later Thursday into Friday.

This next weather front might linger into part of the upcoming weekend.
