Rain expected today

Latest post: 12:45pm - 6/30/2013

After a nice and dry Saturday, changes are in the forecast beginning today.
Clouds have moved in to much of the metro area this morning and early afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop, and much of the Garden state should see rain after 3 or 4pm, moving into NYC and Long Island shortly thereafter. Highs today top out in the muggy 80-85 degree range inland, and upper 70s at the cost.

** Flood Watch for central New Jersey tonight through Monday **

Tonight and Monday are expected to see a increase in the coverage and intensity of the rain, with locally heavy downpours likely, along with a rumble of thunder from time to time. Flooding is a moderate to high threat, particularly for New Jersey, where rainfall rates can reach 1 - 2 inches per hour. Lows tonight drop into the upper 60s to mid- 70s. High tomorrow generally in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Tuesday continues with the threat for heavy down-pours at times. Temperatures reach the upper 70s to lower 80s once again.

Wednesday can still see some showers, but flooding rains are not expected at this time, but will be monitored.

** The 4th of July and Friday are expected to see a break in the rain, but not from the heat, as highs reach 90 degrees for most areas **

Updates on the end of the week will be posted in the coming days.

Next weather disturbance to arrive soon for NJ metro

Weather update:
The next weather disturbance arrives on Sunday... which will occasionally produce flooding downpours for many parts of the NJ metro area...
The time-frame for the on-set of the rain tomorrow is still in question, with one or two weather models bringing in the wet weather in central and south Jersey as early as 10 or 11am  - with most of the weather data suggesting the starting time for most areas is after 4pm.

There is moderate to high confidence that this has the potential to add 2-3 inches of rain for many areas  -- particularly for New Jersey -- from the Sunday night through Tuesday time frame.

An update will be posted tonight when more weather data arrives.

Saturday update for the Garden state

Weather update: There is a 70% chance that we will not see any rain today for NJ metro!

Weather front arriving in NJ metro

Radar update:
Weather system on schedule to arrive in the next hour or two -- producing showers and locally severe thunderstorms -- with heavy downpours, gusty winds, and possibly some small hail.

Not everyone will see the same intensity of the rain, and some may not see rain at all...

Future radar images will determine if warnings are issued.

Updated weekend weather forecast

Latest post: 4:40pm - 6/28/2013

We are ending the week on a warm, humid note, and are waiting for the next weather disturbance to move into the NJ metro area...

Much of the day has been dry, but showers and thunderstorms are moving east from Pennsylvania, and will be arriving between 7 and 8pm, first in western NJ, then the rest of the Garden state, then into NYC and Long Island after 8pm or so.

There is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for central and southern NJ, not including NYC and Long Island, but any storm can be strong to locally severe, with gusty winds, torrential rain, and small hail.
After 11pm or so, the rain should end, as skies become partly cloudy with some patchy fog around. Lows fall into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Saturday is expected to be the better of the two weekend days. There can be some scattered showers and thunderstorms, but should not be as widespread as recent days. Highs top out between 80 and 85 degrees inland, and around 70 or so at the beaches.

On Sunday, the next weather disturbance will be approaching, with rain returning by mid- late afternoon. Highs reach between 80 and 85 inland once again, and lower 70s at the shore.

The new work-week is expected to remain unsettled, with showers and thundershowers continuing.

*** The Flash Flood Watch for northern NJ, NYC and Long Island has been canceled, as rivers are expected to maintain their banks -- but some heavy rain will still be likely **

Thursday weather update for NJ metro

Weather update:
The first of many weather "disturbances"  which will affect the Garden state's weather the next few days is moving into Pennsylvania this morning...
It is not expected to rain for several more hours, with a good portion of the afternoon remaining dry.
Clouds will move in around lunch-time, and showers and thunderstorms will first arrive in western New Jersey around 5pm, then slowly spread east and north through the rest of NJ, NYC and Long Island between 7pm and 10pm tonight.  All areas can see heavy downpours.
*** A flood watch remains in effect from 4pm today until 11am Friday  for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Union counties in New Jersey, as well as the 5 boroughs of NYC, and all of Long Island. **

Updates will be issued as conditions warrant.

Updated metro NJ forecast

Latest post: 11:35pm -- 6/26/2013

In the general sense, the forecast is straight-forward...
Showers and thunderstorms are a possibility each day through Monday...
The time and locations that will see the heaviest rain is very difficult to pin-point now, and will best be determined by radar during the up-coming days.

A warm and humid air mass will be in place for the next several days, and disturbances in the atmosphere will help produce showers and locally heavy thunderstorms right into next week.
It is not expected to rain all the time, with dry periods, and sunny breaks in the forecast as well.

The next weather disturbance is forecast to arrive tomorrow afternoon...
** Flood watches have been put into effect for northern New Jersey, NYC, and Long Island as this arrives -- and 1 - 2 inches of rain is expected for these areas, with lesser amounts for central and southern New Jersey. **

For Friday and the weekend, more chances for rain exist -- with flooding is possible, which will be monitored.

The opportunity for wet weather continues for Monday.

To summarize.. Until further notice, the pattern is in place for periodic showers and thunderstorms, with downpours common, but not all areas will get wet, and it will not be raining all the time.

More updates to come.

Another weather system on Tuesday for NJ metro

Latest post:11:55pm -- 6/17/0213

The new workweek began warm and humid, with many parts of the New Jersey metro area seeing showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

One more weather system is on tap for this week, before a period of storm-free conditions for several days.

Tonight will be mainly clear. Lows fall into the 60s for much of the area.

Tuesday could see some sun early -- with clouds by mid-morning returning. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive in the afternoon. Most weather models indicate the time to be between 1pm and 3pm. Overnight weather data will provide a better estimate, and this will be updated in the morning. Some of these storms are forecasted to be heavy, to possibly severe, and this will be monitored during the day. Highs top out in the lower 70s at the coast, to the lower 80s inland.
More showers and locally severe thunderstorms continue through Tuesday evening, with some left-over showers for Tuesday night. Temperatures are expected to drop into the 60s once again.

By Wednesday, this weather front slowly moves away. Some cloudiness and a bit of rain is possible in the morning, then skies should clear during the afternoon. Temperatures reach between 80 and 85 away from the shore, with cooler readings at the beaches.

*** A nice, dry, rain-free time period expected Thursday, through the upcoming weekend ***
Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected each afternoon, along with low humidity and pleasant temperatures -- reaching the upper 70s and lower 80s for all areas.

A few showers for NJ metro soon...

Radar update: The showers that hold together between 4:30 and 6pm for the NJ metro area continue to be forecast to remain on the light side.

Showers approaching the Garden state

2:30 pm radar update: Watching an area of showers in east/central Pennsylvania...

If they hold together, the Garden state would see some wet weather around 4:30pm -- then moving into the rest of NJ/ NYC, and Long Island between 5 and 6pm.

Updates will be issued accordingly.

Not as nice on Sunday for NJ metro

Weather update: (9:15am -- 6/16/2013)

Limited sunshine today for Dad's Day...
Temperatures will reach between 75 and 80 degrees.

There may be some showers arriving around 4pm -- but a washout is not expected at that time.
More details soon -- as radar images show the rain moving through Pennsylvania.

Weekend weather update for NJ metro

Weather update:
The pattern continues to indicate 2 or 3 more opportunities for wet weather over the next few days...
The first opportunity (unfortunately) has to be mentioned for Sunday...
Sunshine in the morning will quickly give way to clouds  -- and by late in the day (after 4pm or so), scattered showers will be arriving. Tomorrow is not expected to be a washout, but some outdoor plans could see some wet weather for a time later on Sunday...

By Monday and Tuesday, it will be more humid, so more scattered showers and thunderstorms may arrive Monday afternoon or evening.

On Tuesday, dependent on the track, a stronger storm will come close to the NJ metro area, and provide another opportunity for rain at that time.

I think by Wednesday, the stormy pattern should quiet down for several days, which might stay dry right through next weekend...
It's a long way out, but I figure I'd provide some good news for the future...

7:00pm metro NJ radar update

On-and-off showers will continue, mainly for the Garden state, and parts of Long Island, until around 10pm. Some have heavy downpours, producing localized flooding. Severe weather is not expected.

A beautiful day is on tap for Saturday.
Uncertainty continues for Dads Day -- with at least a minimal chance for showers in the afternoon at this point.
More details tonight, and of course, tomorrow.

Scattered showers for NJ metro this afternoon

After the heavy rain in many areas yesterday, we have seen several hours of dry weather and the sun today.

There is one more weather disturbance in connection from yesterday's weather system that has to cross the region this afternoon, so a shower or a brief heavy thundershower is possible, particularly for northern and northwestern new Jersey, NYC and Long Island. Severe weather is not anticipated, but will be monitored. Highs today will reach between 70 and 75 degrees for much of the area.

Tonight may see a shower early in the evening, otherwise skies turn clear. Low temperatures fall into the 50s in the suburbs, to around 60 for metro NJ and New York City.

Saturday is expected to be a beautiful day, with sunshine from start to finish. Temperatures top out in the upper 60s at the shore to around 80 for inland areas.

** The models have sped up the arrival of the next weather front, so Sunday may not be as bright as originally forecast. **

Fathers Day Sunday starts out with some sun, with cloudy conditions moving in during the afternoon. There are indications by a few weather maps that some showers may arrive during the afternoon -- after 3 or 4pm -- but this is a low chance at this time, and there is not clear agreement from other weather models regarding the rain on Sunday. Temperatures should reach the 70s, to possible around 80 degrees inland. Cooler at the beaches.

Sunday night may see some showers, with temperatures mainly in the 70s.

Monday will be warm, with increasing humidity. Highs reach the lower and mid- 80s inland, and mid- to upper 70s at the coast. Showers and thunderstorms will be arriving by evening, or at night.

Tuesday has the best chance for showers and thunderstorms for the new work-week.
Wednesday turns out sunny and pleasant, with highs in the 70s to around 80 degrees.

A pop-up shower this afternoon for NJ metro

Seeing a shower or two moving into northwest New Jersey ...

Another shower or thunderstorm for parts of the area -- particularly for northeast NJ, NYC, and Long Island -- will be around -- between 4 and 6pm.
Severe weather is not expected, but a quick downpour could accompany these showers.

A full forecast will be put together after this post.
